Social Value and Sustainability

Contributing positively to communities and making a positive impact on the environment

Committed

To making a difference

At the heart of our business lies a desire to make people’s lives better and contribute to the overall wellbeing of communities. We are committed to increasing the social value our business creates both in our local area and in the communities served by our customers.

As an integral part of our social value commitment, we are dedicated to making a positive impact on the environment and supporting the UK’s ambition to reach Net Zero by 2050. With a clear roadmap to achieve Net Zero, our sourcing, manufacturing, logistics and installation strategies are to designed to minimise our carbon footprint, promote sustainability, and contribute to a greener future. This commitment not only guides our own operations but also enables us to support the Net Zero goals of our clients.

Together, we can deliver sustainable solutions that contribute positively to society and create a healthier, cleaner and greener world.

Practical Steps

That are making a positive impact

Social Value

– Engaging Local Employees: For installation and maintenance contracts, where circumstances allow we recruit direct local employees. These employees are offered the same personal and professional development opportunities as all our employees.

– £££s in Local Supply Chains: Wherever possible we use local suppliers and have a well-established network of contractors throughout the country to support this.

– Promoting Good Mental Health: We value the contribution made by our staff and the importance of maintaining good mental health. We have a Mental Health First Aid and ASIST qualified member of staff who is available to all staff and who helps us organise work place events in line with the Mental Health Calendar.

Sustainable Manufacturing and Circular Design

– Mono Shelters:

From 2025, our shelters and bus stop poles are built using 100% recycled content aluminium billet. The switch is part of our continued progress towards Net Zero, and sees us move from aluminium billet containing approximately 43–45% recycled material to 100% recycled billet – reducing embodied carbon from around 5.73 kg CO₂ per kg of aluminium to approximately 1–2 kg CO₂ per kg. (Read about the switch here)

Our aluminium supplier, Exalco S.A., holds independently verified Environmental Product Declarations for all aluminium profile types we use. By 2026 they are targeting 100% renewable electricity in production — their solar systems already generate more electricity than they consume.

– Renewable Energy Suppliers: In 2026, all electricity used in our production processes will be sourced from renewable energy. We audit our material suppliers regularly and are entering Scope 3 Carbon Auditing of our value chain. We purchase from material suppliers that demonstrate a net zero commitment. Our purchasing has moved closer to the UK, with UK and European mills contracted for aluminium extrusion and UK companies used for glass and polycarbonate stock. Polycarbonate manufacturers in the chain must also demonstrate they recycle polycarbonate as part of their process.

– Modular and Reusable Shelters: Our Mono shelters are designed for longevity and reuse. Modular components allow for shelters to be repurposed, reducing waste and extending their lifespan. This modularity supports our customers in achieving sustainable infrastructure objectives.

– High-Quality Manufacturing: We prioritise quality in production, ensuring our products last longer, reducing the need for replacement, and promoting resource efficiency—helping our customers meet their long-term sustainability goals.

Energy Management

– Self-Sustaining Shelters: Our shelters can operate fully from renewable energy and battery power to keep the carbon footprint low throughout its life.

– Renewable Energy Use: All electricity used in our Thatcham facility and offices is sourced from renewable energy tariffs, reducing our Scope 2 emissions to zero. We are exploring investments in solar and wind farms to further reduce our carbon footprint and help customers meet their energy sustainability goals.

– Electric Fleet: We have recently taken delivery of two Kia PV5 electric vans, now entering service on survey operations. We continue to operate a Euro 6 diesel fleet for installation and maintenance work where electric vehicles are not yet operationally suitable, and will expand our EV fleet as duty cycles and infrastructure allow.

– Reducing Road Miles: We use route optimisation software and batch jobs — combining civils, installation and maintenance visits where practical — to cut unnecessary mileage across all operations.

Biodiversity Enhancements & Initiatives

– Green Roof Shelters: As leaders in green roof shelter projects, we provide biodiversity-friendly infrastructure with living roofs that support local pollinators. Our MONO shelters help customers integrate biodiversity into their sustainability initiatives.

– Environmental and Biodiversity Conservation: On long-term contracts, we contribute a % of the total contract value towards local environmental and biodiversity conservation projects, and in national initiatives that contribute to climate change mitigation and provide local access to wild, green spaces that bring health and wellbeing benefits.

Sustainable Repair and Maintenance Practices

– Local and Efficient Operations: By employing local maintenance staff and optimising delivery routes, we minimise fuel consumption and environmental impact. Our use of low-carbon materials and biodegradable cleaning products supports our customers in maintaining sustainable infrastructure.

Waste Management and Reduction

– Operational Practises: Our commitment to waste reduction and recycling has seen significant improvement to our operations over recent years. 95% of waste metals generated are recycled and 0% of waste from our Thatcham production facility and offices goes to landfill. Spoil is separated into asphalt, aggregate and soils and recycled. Plastics use has been significantly reduced. Packaging has been targeted: total packaging has been reduced by 40% and the amount of single use plastics has been cut by 62% through different packaging material use such as starch-based wrap.

– Component Reuse and Recycling: We survey and reuse valuable components from shelters, recycling unusable materials responsibly. This approach reduces waste and emissions, directly benefiting our customers’ efforts to meet circular economy and waste reduction targets.

Sustainable Cleaning and Maintenance

– Eco-friendly Cleaning: Our cleaning practices utilise biodegradable products and high-pressure systems to minimise chemical use. By harvesting rainwater for cleaning, we contribute to water conservation efforts that align with our customers’ environmental goals.
